Damp January: We Tried the Non-Alcoholic Alternatives So You Don't Have To

Look, we couldn't commit to Dry January. It's still football season! But "Damp January" - limiting the booze to weekends only - felt achievable. Here's what we learned testing non-alcoholic alternatives for the weeknight void.
The Mission
My wife and I decided to embrace healthier habits without going full monk mode. The rules were simple: no alcohol Monday through Thursday, weekends are fair game. But that left a gap - what do you drink when you want something more interesting than water but less destructive than your third bourbon?
We went deep. Three brands, multiple products, one month of testing. Here's the honest breakdown.
Hiyo Organic Social Tonic - 3/5 Stars
Site: drinkhiyo.com
Let's start with the good: these taste fantastic. Light, refreshing, genuinely enjoyable flavors. There's a subtle relaxation effect that takes the edge off without any next-day regret. Mrs. Questionable approved, which is no small feat.
Now the bad: $44 for a 12-pack.
That's nearly $4 per can for something that disappears in about six sips. At that price point, I might as well just drink on weeknights and skip the gym membership I'm also not using.
Verdict: Delicious, but I need these closer to $2/can before I'm a regular customer. Bought through Amazon - same price, faster delivery.
Kava Haven - 4/5 Stars
Site: kavahaven.com
I'm on my second bottle, and this one's staying in the rotation.
The move here is mixing it with ginger beer - creates a light, refreshing mocktail that actually delivers. There's a genuine relaxing sensation and a pleasant buzz on the tongue that makes you feel like you're drinking something.
Full disclosure: Mrs. Questionable wasn't a fan. But I am, and since I'm the one who needed weeknight alternatives to stop raiding the bourbon shelf, my vote counts double here.
Verdict: Solid daily driver. Damp February, here we come. Bought through Amazon.
Free Spirits - 5/5 Stars
Site: drinkfreespirits.com
We went all-in: Bourbon, Gin, Tequila, Apertivo, and Vermouth.
Here's what surprised us - they don't smell like the spirits they're imitating. Open the bourbon and you won't get that familiar oak-and-vanilla nose. But mix them into a cocktail and suddenly the flavor profile is right there.
The margaritas with their Tequila were especially on point. Like, genuinely good margaritas that happened to not have any alcohol in them. Mrs. Questionable and I were both impressed, and getting both of us to agree on anything drink-related is rare.
Important note: these are for mixing, not sipping neat. Treat them like cocktail ingredients, not whiskey replacements.
Verdict: The clear winner. Bought directly from their site. Worth every penny.
Was Damp January Worth It?
Honestly? Yeah.
We saved money (even with the NA purchases), slept better on weeknights, and discovered that a well-made mocktail can actually scratch the itch. We're not swearing off alcohol - that would be crazy talk - but having solid alternatives for the Monday-through-Thursday stretch has been a legitimate lifestyle upgrade.
Damp February is officially on the calendar.
